Medical Report: Patients deserve health care as unique as they are

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — There has been a dramatic change of approach in health care in the past decade, and it is starting to yield results.

We are all different, and there is no doubt that our society often celebrates these differences, yet just as easily uses them to be divisive and destructive. In health care, differences need to be respected, but they must also be identified and understood. People have different socioeconomic and genetic backgrounds. We are all at higher risk for varied health issues of one sort or another.

Doctors are now being trained to examine socioeconomic and racial differences and to direct treatment with these things in mind. The use of computer technology and areas of discipline such as population health are guiding care — achieving better results. Racial disparities are being uncovered and corrected.

This matters, because, as different as we all are, every one of us deserves the best care — and care that is as individualized as possible.
