PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Parents who have lost children to gun violence marched from the School District of Philadelphia headquarters on North Broad Street to City Hall on Thursday to observe Mother’s Day with a plea for peace.
Among the speakers was former Pennsylvania State Rep. Movita Johnson-Harrell, who lost her son when he was just 18 years old.
“We say the children are the future. That’s not just a cliché,” Johnson-Harrell said. “The children are the future. We should not be burying a whole generation of children.”
Felicia Pendleton of the group Mothers United by Angels urged parents to keep a tighter rein on their children.
“I’m asking all of you parents out here that have younger children: Find somewhere for your children to go after school. Know where your children are,” Pendleton said. “If you’re paying the cell phone bill, you should know the location.”
The march and rally was organized by the anti-violence group Mothers In Charge.
