PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A 20-year-old East Mt. Airy man is facing first-degree murder charges, accused of killing his boyfriend in Pottstown in 2019, hiding the body in a Germantown arboretum, and then drawing money from his accounts.
Keshaun Sheffield is accused of killing Rashid Young, 22, in his Pottstown apartment on Aug. 19, 2019, in what Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele is calling a case of relationship violence.
Young’s family said they last saw him on that day. Steele said the family told investigators about strange messages they received afterward.
“We're getting text messages from [their] son, that don't sound like him, that don't want him, that make it out that he no longer wants [them] in his life, and that didn't make sense to the family,” said Steele.
“The explanations from the man that their son was involved with just didn't make sense to them.”
According to charging documents, Sheffield is accused of stabbing Young repeatedly, then turning on a sink with a plugged drain to flood the apartment. The complaint says he put Young’s body in a Pottstown Borough recycling bin, took it to his mother’s home in East Mt. Airy, then buried it on the grounds of Awbury Arboretum.
The body was found about a month later, but was unidentified until last week.
Young had a $2 million trust from a lawsuit settlement. Sheffield is accused of continuing to draw money from Young’s account.
“As it turns out, the defendant took over his accounts,” said Steele. “He took over his social accounts, he took over his bank accounts, and for a significant period of time, was getting money from those accounts.”
Sheffield was arrested Wednesday when he showed up for a hearing in Montgomery County. He is being held without bail.
