PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — By now, we've all felt some of the pain at the gas pump, with prices averaging $4.30 a gallon in Philadelphia. Fortunately, there are a few adjustments you can make that may save you a few bucks in the long run.
One of them: obeying the speed limit.
“We’re all guilty of going a few miles over the speed limit,” said AAA Mid-Atlantic spokesperson Jana Tidwell. “Everybody seems to be in a rush these days. People feel that, ‘Oh, I’ll get there a few minutes faster.’ And you very well might. However, you will burn more fuel in the process.”
Once home, she said it’s important to keep an eye on the tire pressure. Make sure the wheels are inflated to the car’s recommended amount.
“Improperly inflated tires cause you to burn more fuel to move the vehicle,” explained Tidwell.
Get regular oil changes too, and ask your mechanic if your car is running as fuel-efficient as possible.

Less junk in the truck can also help with fuel efficiency — additional items in the rear weigh down the car, and, in turn, use more gas.
Another simple way to keep the cost down or avoid it altogether is to carpool or use public transportation.
“And if you know that you have a list of errands to run, do them all in one shot rather than going out and back home, and out and back home on multiple trips,” Tidwell added.
The pinch at the pump is going to get worse before it gets better. Experts predict some cities could see prices rise to $5 a gallon.
