California residents are beginning to return home to sort through the destruction of the wildfires. Through the rubble, one evacuee miraculously found his fiancee-to-be’s engagement ring.
Nick Maes was searching the debris at his parents’ house, when he spotted the safe holding the ring. He had been planning to propose to his girlfriend of two years, Shastina Hughes. The deadly Camp Fire delayed this.
Nick pried open the safe and found the ring scattered amidst ashes. It was melted and had a bullet around it, but it can be restored.
Hughes says she grateful the ring is safe. Her priority now, though, is raising awareness about organizations helping victims of the fire.
