You’re going to need some very expensive cheese to go with this wine. That’s because Sotheby’s just sold a 1945 bottle of Romanee-Conti for more than half a million dollars.
It’s considered to be one of France’s best Burgundies. Only 600 bottles were made that year.
After their production, the vineyard was uprooted for replanting. So Sotheby’s calls the bottle “rare and wonderful.”
Although, the auction house was still surprised it sold for $558,000 -- 17 times more than the max of what they expected.
The bottle is not alone in its top shelf price. A Macallan 1926 whiskey just fetched more than $800K. This was the most in Sotheby’s history for a spirit and the highest auction price for a spirit sold in North America.
