LISTEN: Steve Young Discusses Comparison to Saints QB Taysom Hill

(WWL) -- The legend of Taysom Hill got an even bigger boost from Sean Payton after he compared the “Mr. Do It All” of the Saints to Pro Football Hall-of-Famer Steve Young.

"If you look back at Steve's career, people don't remember the time before he came to the NFL, you have a very athletic player that, I think, advanced when he got to San Francisco," said Coach Payton. "He always had great ability with his legs, so you're trying to create visions for players.”

Before coming to the NFL, Young played in the USFL and became the first professional quarterback to throw for 300 yards and run for 100 yards in a game. Hill has shown similar athleticism with his feet, but still has a lot to prove with his arm.

“He’s got a job in the NFL that he can do for a little while. It’s like a 7 handed knife, but I don’t know if that’s the job he wants to do for 15 years. And, so that’s the real challenge,” Young said on Sports Talk with Bobby Hebert & Kristian Garic. “How does he gets the reps to actually develop into an NFL QB? That’s what Sean is really saying. Early on, I didn’t know what I was doing, but I learned how to do it. That’s what you have to figure how to get the reps and take advantage of it and become an expert.”

Young added, “I know that Taysom is doing that. He’s spending the time, but is he going to get the opportunity? And, then when he does it, can he develop into a frontline quarterback? That’s the real question.”

Last season with the Saints, Hill saw very limited action actually playing quarterback in the regular season. He completed 3 of 7 passes for 64 yards, with no touchdowns and one interception. Young was able to replace a legend in Joe Montana; will Hill be able to do the same with Drew Brees?
