The Golden State Warriors are getting hot at the right time. In spite of the team's middling 36-33 record and position in the West's play-in tournament standings, they've won three straight games -- 12 of their last 17, dating back to mid-April -- and done so with Stephen Curry performing like an unflappable assassin from beyond the arc.
Are the Warriors capable of playing spoiler? Yes. Are they capable of making a deep playoff run with their championship-experienced players dialed-in together? Yes.
But is the San Francisco Bay Area more preoccupied with the drama surrounding its basketball team, or the excitement involving its football team?
The answer is up for debate, according to San Francisco's 95.7 The Game host Ryan Covay.
"It's juicy. It's close," Covay told After Hours with Amy Lawrence on Tuesday morning. "I would probably still lean 49ers because everybody's still buzzing about [No. 3 overall pick] Trey Lance and how he's going to work with [incumbent quarterback] Jimmy Garoppolo, what's his relationship with [head coach] Kyle Shanahan, expectations are high for the 49ers. But, I would say, if the Warriors get into the playoffs and start making a little noise, that might pass the 49ers, because we're still a few months out from training camp. But I would still say it's advantage 49ers right now. That was a big boy move by [general manager John] Lynch and Shanahan, moving up to get Trey Lance. By the way, everybody thought they were going to draft [Alabama's] Mac Jones and they were going to lose their minds.
"So, basically, I think the Bay Area is still catching its collective breath, that they drafted Trey Lance instead of Mac Jones. Mac Jones would've been an apocalyptic reaction in the Bay Area, based on the calls that we took at 95.7. So, Niners now, but if the Warriors get into the postseason, Steph and Draymond [Green] can retake that mantle pretty quickly."
