JR: NBA needs to speed up its anticlimactic replay reviews, and soon

There's nothing quite like a drawn-out replay review marring an instant-classic NBA playoff game.

According to StatMuse, the final 90 seconds of Game 2 of the West finals between the Phoenix Suns and LA Clippers took 33 minutes in real time. There were as many replay reviews (5) as field goals during this span, which sucked the life out of DeAndre Ayton's game-winning "Valley Oop" dunk with 0.7 seconds left in regulation.

During Wednesday's edition of the JR SportBrief show, JR discussed the Suns' epic win, and the NBA's dilemma with replay reviews in crunch time.

"The NBA needs to speed it up, and all of the technology is available," JR said. "If the NFL says, 'We want to ensure that a first down is a first down,' they could do it. They could put enough cameras, they could put enough censors on the field. They could put a chip in the football. They could do all of this without anyone watching the game -- at the game or at home -- knowing. There wouldn't be anything obtrusive to the game...

"If you're trying to bring in casual fans, if you're trying to keep most fans, there should be no reason 90 seconds literally takes 33 minutes. Most people are going to say, 'I'm out of here. What the hell am I sitting down watching this for? Dammit, I could've watched a sitcom in the same amount of time.' And so hopefully, the NBA makes this change sooner than later. Hopefully, they don't wait for the problem to get worse before they change it.

"The NBA is generally proactive. They've been proactive in limiting the amount of timeouts at the end of games. And now they need to kind of put the hammer down, and tell their officials and replay center, 'We can do better. We need to cut down on the amount of time that we're actually reviewing calls, because it's counterproductive.' Get the damn call right. And please, keep it moving. It's really that simple."

Phoenix, which owns a commanding 2-0 series lead, will face the Clippers in Game 3 on Thursday night in Los Angeles, with tipoff scheduled for 9 p.m. ET. According to FiveThirtyEight's projections, the Suns have an 88-percent chance of advancing to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1993.
