JR: Pump the brakes on comparing Zion to Shaq

It didn't take too long for phenom Zion Williamson to be mentioned in the same breath as one of the NBA's greatest bigs when it comes to breaking league records.

On Monday night, the New Orleans Pelicans defeated the Boston Celtics, 115-109, behind Williamson's team-leading 28 points on 11-for-22 shooting. According to ESPN Stats & Info, it was Williamson's 24th consecutive game scoring at least 20 points on 50-percent shooting or better, and he's now one game shy of tying Shaquille O'Neal for the longest such streak in the Shot Clock Era (1954-55).

During Tuesday's JR SportBrief show, JR shared his thoughts on Williamson's overall makeup, and the potential he has as a long-term NBA superstar.

"What is his ceiling? If he can go ahead and kind of refine his shot -- and I don't think that should be a problem -- Zion Williamson can continue to be great," JR said. "We know his conditioning and his size. What the hell does this man do when he's 30? How does his body hold up for another 10 years? Can you play your entire career just bowling ball to the basket? It's nice when you're 20. What do you do when you're 25? Are you going to hit that open J so you don't have to charge to the basket? Are you strictly going to try to run there every single time?

"Shaq operated down low. Give him the ball in the paint, let him use his body, let him go to work. He was fouled. He was abused. He wasn't just running into the paint looking for contact, looking to convert. There was a massive difference between the height, between the skill. So Zion, he has a ways to go. Is he a physical freak like a Shaquille O'Neal, is he psychical, is he in his own space? Yes. Is he Shaq? No...

"And so when it comes to Zion Williamson's ceiling, it's not Shaquille O'Neal. But it is certainly an All-Star. It is certainly a physical freak, a physical marvel. He's 20 years old. He has to develop his game, and he also has to make sure he can make his body last for the next 10 years. What is Zion's ceiling? I think the ceiling for him is an All-Star every single year, every single season. But at 20 years old, he has to make sure that his body can last that long. Let's see what he does."

Williamson has been on an absolute tear in the month of March. In 12 games, the former No. 1 overall pick has averaged 28.7 points per game on 64.5-percent shooting, along with 7.1 rebounds and 4.0 assists.

The Pelicans are scheduled to play against the Orlando Magic on Thursday night in New Orleans.
