Gonzaga didn't encounter any detours or roadblocks on its road to the Final Four this March. The top-seeded Bulldogs simply cruised, averaging 88 points on offense in four tournament games with an average margin of victory of 23 points. Head and shoulders above the other West region teams.
But if Gonzaga (30-0) wants to complete the perfect season and be crowned college basketball's first undefeated champion since 1976, they'll have to beat some stiff competition. And assuming the highest-ranking seeds advance to the national title game, that means facing No. 1 seed Baylor for a chance to cut down the nets.
"I do think Baylor can beat this team," SicEm365 college hoops reporter Jason King told The DA Show on Wednesday. "Now, I think it would be an upset, without question, but I don't know if it'd be like this mammoth upset. Baylor's really good, man... These guards -- some people say trio, but there's actually four of them when you talk about bringing Adam Flagler off the bench -- [junior] Davion Mitchel... man, he's good. He's one of the better all-around point guards in the country, maybe the best point guard in the country. I think he's going to be a Top-20, Top-25 draft pick, which is something no one would've expected. So good defensively.
"[Junior] Jared Butler, first-team All-American. [Senior] Macio Teague the other night hit 10 of 12 threes against Texas Tech. He's a big-time shooter, big-time scorer. I think he's got nearly 2,000 points in his career. And then [sophomore] Adam Flagler off the bench. Just a really, really good backcourt that can really score.
"I'll say this, it's amazing they've gotten this far without a really good big. They're really out-manned down low, and of course, that's why they're playing four guards or a small lineup with [senior guard] Mark Vital in there a lot. They don't have a good big -- at least not yet. Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua in a year or two may be pretty good, but I think that's their glaring weak point."
Baylor, the top seed in the bracket's South region, has reached the Final Four for the first time since 1950, and will face No. 2 seed Houston on Saturday (5:14 p.m. ET tip-off) at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
As mentioned by King, three of the Bears' skilled guards -- Mitchell, Butler, and Teague -- have combined to score 46.5 of the team's 83 average points per game in the tournament. Plus, Baylor ranks first in the nation in three-point shooting at 41-percent.
The second national semifinal game (8:34 p.m. ET tip-off) will be Gonzaga against UCLA. With their win over No. 1 seed Michigan in the Elite Eight on Tuesday, the Bruins became the fifth No. 11 seed to ever reach the Final Four, and just the second team to go from the First Four to the Final Four.
According to ESPN, 34.3-percent of the 16.2 million brackets submitted in its annual tournament challenge selected Gonzaga to win the national championship, while 10.4-percent selected Baylor.
