Gillen on Gonzaga: 'They're in a league of their own'

Gonzaga wasn't awarded the No. 1 overall seed in this year's March Madness by mistake. Just look at the numbers from this past weekend.

The undefeated Bulldogs showcased their dominance during the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, defeating No. 16 seed Norfolk State, 98-55, last Saturday and No. 8 seed Oklahoma, 87-71, on Monday. With four more wins, Gonzaga would complete the perfect season, and become the first undefeated champion since Indiana accomplished the feat during the 1975-76 season.

Of course, this isn't the first year Gonzaga has been pegged as a legitimate national title contender. They've been either a No. 1 or No. 2 seed five times since 2013, and in each of those seasons, they failed to cut down the nets.

But most college basketball analysts, including CBS Sports Network's Pete Gillen, agree that this particular Bulldogs team is elite, and bound to break the program's championship curse.

"In all honesty, they're in a league of their own," Gillen told The DA Show on Tuesday. "They've got three pros right away. I mean, [freshman guard Jalen] Suggs might be the second guy drafted [in the NBA], Top-3, and he's unbelievable. [Senior forward Corey] Kispert could be a late lottery pick, and [sophomore forward] Drew Timme could be a first-round pick for sure. They've got unbelievable players... I think their one weakness is, if you get a good big man to go inside and get Timme in foul trouble, I think that's the one thing that can hurt them a little bit. But their numbers are like video game numbers. They average 92 points per game, they shoot 55-percent from the field. I've never heard of that in college basketball at the Division I level... 55-percent! That's incredible.

"So, this is what the 'Gonzaga Invitational' looks like. But, you never say never. Someone could turn an ankle, get sick, personal problems. So, anything can happen, COVID, hopefully nothing badly happens. But I think only some type of fluke can really slow them down right now."

Gonzaga, located in the West region of the bracket, is scheduled to face No. 5 seed Creighton in a Sweet Sixteen matchup on Sunday, Mar. 28, at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. With a win over the Bluejays, it'd mark the Bulldogs' fourth trip to the Elite Eight since 2015, and fifth trip overall under head coach Mark Few.
