Dunne: 'I just feel like it's doomed in Dallas' with Mike McCarthy as head coach

The jury is still out on whether longtime head coach Mike McCarthy can lead the Dallas Cowboys to a championship, as Dak Prescott's devastating ankle injury during Week 5 of last season made their 2020 a lost cause.

But GoLongTD.com's Tyler Dunne harbors some doubts about McCarthy's fit with the Cowboys. He's not exactly convinced that McCarthy's old-ish school personality meshes well with today's players.

"Those who were critical of him that I've talked to over the years who were in Green Bay, they described him as not very relatable," Dunne told The DA Show on Thursday. "Especially when you compare him to a lot of the younger coaches today who can maybe relate to the modern day player. He just really can't. I think it feels kind of forced, the Austin Powers stuff.

"I remember in Green Bay, he put up video clips and stuff all the time, and some guys told me, 'Yeah, those jokes don't always land, his points don't always land and it's just kind of strange and awkward'... I just feel like it's doomed in Dallas... When it gets into January, Mike McCarthy's teams have proven to kind of wilt away in that moment. I don't think it's coincidence."

There's undeniable pressure on the Cowboys -- which finished in third place with a 6-10 record last season -- to meet fans' high expectations and deliver on a Super Bowl promise. The franchise hasn't hoisted a Lombardi Trophy in over 25 years, and they've yet to appear in an NFC title game this century.

Dallas will open the 2021 regular season on the road against the defending champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday, Sept. 9. According to the William Hill Sportsbook, the Cowboys currently have the best odds (+120) to win the NFC East, and the sixth-best odds (+1500) to win the conference.
