Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer has long lauded the leadership qualities of Tim Tebow, who recently signed a one-year minimum deal to convert from quarterback to tight end -- a position he's never played before.
But is Meyer putting an inordinate amount of stock into what the 33-year-old veteran -- five seasons removed from the NFL -- can actually offer to players, both on and off the field?
CBS Sports senior NFL columnist Pete Prisco sure believes so.
"Even if he made the team and he was the last guy on the roster, nobody's going to look to him to help establish the culture or be a leader, because he's not good," Prisco told The DA Show on Thursday. "I've talked to many players around the league and I've been in many locker rooms around the league talking to players. And one thing is apparent: when you're a good player, you usually can be a leader. When you're not a good player, you're not going to be a leader. Nobody wants to hear from the special teams gunner, that guy leading the team. They want to hear from the star players.
"All you have to do is look at when guys are injured -- I'm talking about star players being injured. When you're in a locker room and a star player is injured -- he hobbles through on his crutches as the rest of the team is getting ready to go out to practice -- you can pretty much tell he's not a leader anymore. They may as well consider him being dead, because he's not a part of the team. And that's why this idea that Tim Tebow is going to be a leader and help establish the culture is absolutely 100-percent ridiculous.
"And the other thing that's ridiculous is, 'Oh, they're trying to take the focus off Trevor Lawrence.' If you have to take the focus off Trevor Lawrence, then you drafted the wrong guy. And I don't think they did, so that's foolishness in itself."
Tebow, a former Heisman winner and first-round pick of the Denver Broncos in 2010, complied an 8-6 record as the team's starting quarterback, and appeared in two playoff games during the 2011 season. In 2012, Tebow signed a deal with the New York Jets and attempted only eight passes, and before leaving the league, he spent offseasons with the New England Patriots (2013) and Philadelphia Eagles (2015).
In 35 total NFL games, Tebow has completed 173 of 361 pass attempts for 2,422 yards with 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He's also rushed for 989 yards on 197 attempts and scored 12 times.
