Tebow: 'I had a couple good convos' with one NFL team about playing tight end years ago

Tim Tebow's experience, or experiment, as an NFL tight end was short-lived. In mid-August, the former Heisman winner and quarterback was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars, as part of a routine set of preseason roster moves.

But Tebow's attempt to change positions after six years removed from the league wasn't exactly a half-baked idea, or as thrown together as most fans and players believed. During his first stint in the NFL, Tebow had a serious discussion with one team about the possibility of converting to tight end.

"I had a couple of good conversations with [New Orleans Saints head coach] Sean Payton years ago about it," Tebow told The DA Show on Friday. "But then Bill Belichick called the next day, so I went to the Patriots. It's not just about [the QB opportunities offered], it's how you think you're going to be used. There's so many things that you take into account with all of those things.

"Obviously, Sean Payton, with how smart he is, that was super intriguing. What an incredible OC he is, and play caller, and head coach. So, that was something intriguing. But when you get the opportunity to be Tom Brady's backup, that's something you look at, as well."

Tebow, who signed a one-year minimum deal with the Jaguars in May, last played a regular season NFL game in 2012. In 35 career games, the former first-round draft pick has completed 173 of 361 pass attempts for 2,422 yards with 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He's also rushed for 989 yards on 197 attempts and scored 12 times.

During his short time in Jacksonville, Tebow was reunited with head coach Urban Meyer, who helped Tebow win a pair of national championships with the Florida Gators during the late 2000s. His fate as a tight end was sealed during the Jaguars' first preseason game -- he played just 16 total snaps and went viral on social media after botching a routine block attempt.

Jacksonville (0-2) will host the Arizona Cardinals in a Week 3 matchup on Sunday afternoon. According to FiveThirtyEight's projections, the Jaguars currently have just a 5-percent chance to reach the playoffs.
