Captain Murphy is back on the "SVU" beat.
“Law & Order: SVU” has its winter premiere of the 23rd season on January 6, and it promises some sparks, as it will feature the return of Donal Logue as Capt. Declan Murphy.
As TV Line reminds us, Murphy was an undercover officer on the show in seasons 15 through 17. He became romantically involved with Det. Amanda Rollins, played by Kelli Giddish. The romance didn’t last, but Murphy was around long enough to father Rollins’ elder daughter, Jesse.
If you just can’t wait, NBC released a sneak peek clip that features Rollins, Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Fin Tutuola (Ice-T) gathered together on Christmas Eve by Chief McGrath (Terry Serpico) who informs them that SVU will assist Murphy’s team with a rash of seemingly coordinated hate crimes.
There's an awkward situation right in the middle of the clip that'll tickle fans. Surprised at seeing him, Rollins says, “Declan, wow, I didn’t know you were back.”
“I’ve barely unpacked,” he responds.
She answers, “Nice to see you. Welcome home.”
After a pause, Chief Murphy breaks the silence with, “Ah good, you all know each other.”
But Murphy isn’t the only surprise who will reappear in the premiere. Sgt. Hasim Khaldun (Ari’el Stachel), from seasons 21 and 22, and Det. Mia Ruz (Cyndee Rivera), who previously worked at Bronx SVU under "Criminal Intent" alum, Carolyn Barek, also come back for more crime solving.
Though not from within the "SVU" world, another familiar guest star on the episode will be Jason Biggs, who’s introduced as a member of the hate crimes task force.
Biggs is mostly known as a comic actor, having made his name in the popular “American Pie” films. But he has a resume of more serious roles too, including another popular crime show, “Orange is the New Black.”
The new episode of "Law & Order: SVU" airs January 6 at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
