Amazon's Delivery Service program for veterans: $1 million in revenue with $0 down

When Amazon started to realize they would soon grow to outpace their logistical workforce where did they turn for help? Veterans. 

Amazon's Delivery Service Partner program provides all the training, resources, and connections needed to start your own partnered delivery service. And — for veterans — it's also funded. 

In the hopes of bringing in leaders with the experience that military service offers, Amazon pledged $1 million towards funding startup costs for military veterans, offering $10,000 reimbursements for qualified candidates. 

"I was able to generate $1 million in revenue and it didn't cost me anything," said Blake Vaughn, owner of Patriot DSP. "The start-up costs to do this program as a veteran — Amazon paid me $10,000 to cover all the supplies we had to build early on."

Vaughn, a Navy veteran, followed the footsteps of multiple family members into military service — but he always knew he was meant to be an entrepreneur. And Amazon offered him the perfect opportunity to become just that.

"To me, it was just the opportunity to work with Amazon and learn from Amazon and how Amazon does things. I knew that would be a valuable enough experience, nevermind the potential revenue or profit you could make," Vaughn said. 

For Vaughn, the revenue ended up being a huge bonus.

"The program was set up to get to 20 routes, 20 vans in 12 weeks. We ended up doing 52 vans in 53 days and generated over 1 million in revenue in the first 93 days," Vaughn said. 

What helped Vaughn achieve such significant growth? His military service and the skills he learned through it — perseverance, delegation, efficiency. 

"We were only able to do that because of the systems and processes, our ability to follow directions, division of labor — all those things I learned in the military," Vaughn said.

These skills are exactly why Amazon looks to hire and support veterans like Vaughn. 

"Amazon has a long history of supporting military veterans through our hiring efforts," said Amazon spokesperson Amanda Ip. "For us, we think successful business leaders think big, have a bias for action, deliver results on behalf of their customer. These principles look very familiar to the men and women who have served in the Armed Forces. So when we thought about this program we really wanted to incentivize military veterans to come join us."
