Sammie Stricker is helping veterans by turning lemons into lemonade.
For the past five years, the 13-year-old entrepreneur has set up Sammie’s Lemonade Stand for Veterans and donated her earnings to the Aleda E. Lutz VA Medical Center in Saginaw, Michigan.
Stricker does not come from a military family and learned that the veterans at the hospital needed things like toothpaste and blankets by word of mouth.
“I was 9 when I first started my lemonade stand and I was just going to set up to earn money for myself and then I found out about people who needed money more than I did,” she said.
Stricker hopes to raise a total of $5,000 over the five days she’s in business. She believes that goal is reachable. Last year she raised $2,000 over 2 days.
“The veterans are so happy,” she said. “They use the money for blankets and other stuff they need at the hospital.”
The stand will be set up from July 17-21 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at American Legion Post 439. Lemonade sells for $1 a glass.
