Military Dedication Awards & Affiliations:
Kristin Byerly, Director of Veterans Initiatives and Outreach (VIO)
“As a proud member of the Veterans Program team at UMGC. The creation of a separate department demonstrates our dedication to the military. We allow participation in the VA Yellow Ribbon program as well as offering many other benefits to veteran students. Our degrees have received multiple recognitions and showcase our commitment to “To be the most trusted and respected university within the military and veteran community.
Being a former student and an alumnus as well, who is military-connected (daughter, spouse, and mom. GO NAVY), I understand the need for our university to ensure our policies and practices reflect and appreciate our military community. Military connected is an extremely diverse population which adds to quality of the classroom discussion and may incorporate the global real-world experience. With a university as large as UMGC the opportunity for networking with fellow alumni is expansive. Our veteran team works closely with our Career and Alumni Services to ensure there are multiple networking and career-related opportunities understanding that the goal of that student is to graduate and find their dream job. UMGC does this every day.”
Kelly Grooms, Assistant Director of Veterans Initiatives and Outreach (VIO)
“As Assistant Director of Veterans Initiatives and Outreach, I work closely with faculty to ensure that they understand the challenges that our military-connected student population face and how their guidance and flexibility is key to their success. In addition to faculty, UMGC staff are on-site at many military locations across the globe. I manage a team of dedicated staff that works directly with veteran students on-site at select MD Community Colleges (virtually during current COVD restrictions). This team, as well as our global advisors, assist students with understanding their VA Benefits, transfer credit, and degree plans. Additionally, the VIO team includes two Student Veteran Workers whose primary role is to offer peer-to-peer support to student veterans who visit our student veteran lounge. I am proud of the work that my team does each day to support the professional, academic, and financial needs of those who have served.
The VIO team of veteran advisors and student veteran workers partner with the VSOC counselors as liaisons for veteran students that need to speak with someone from the VA regarding educational goals and benefits. This partnership also allows for virtual advising hours for the counselors directly in our student veterans lounge.
