(670 The Score) -- The Cubs agreed to trade reliever Carl Edwards Jr. to the Padres just before the deadline passed Wednesday afternoon, Jesse Rogers of ESPN reported.
In return, Chicago received lefty reliever Brad Wieck from San Diego, according to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune. Wieck, 27, has most recently been playing at Triple-A, where he has a 6.11 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in 14 appearances this season. He had a 6.57 ERA and 1.42 WHIP in 30 appearances for the Padres earlier in the season.
A key member of the Cubs' bullpen when they won the World Series in 2016, Edwards struggled for most of this season and fell out of favor. He was demoted to Triple-A Iowa about a week into the regular season, then again demoted on July 22 after he had made a return to the big league team just days prior.
Edwards had a 5.87 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 20 appearances for the Cubs this season.
