Jamie Bell, Margaret Qualley to star in Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers biopic for Amazon

Amazon Studios and Automatik have found its Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

Jamie Bell and Margaret Qualley have been cast as the iconic dancing pair.

Bell is best known for playing Bernie Taupin on “Rocketman,” while Qualley starred as Jill Garvey on “The Leftovers.”

The duo are no strangers to the dancefloor, however. Both have mastered choreography for previous roles – Bell for “Billy Elliot” and Qualley for FX’s “Fosse/Verdon.”

The film, titled “Fred and Ginger,” takes a peak behind the stage personas of the dance partners.

“The biopic will tell the untold, real love story between the two legends both on and off the screen,” Deadline reports.

Fred Berger and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones of Automatik are set to produce.

Bell, Qualley, and Arash Amel, who wrote the script that the film is based off of, will also serve as producers.

Fred and Ginger were dance partners in a total of 9 black and white films from 1933 to 1939. They were first cast in supporting roles in the 1993 film “Flying Down to Rio,” but their performance in the “Carioca” and their dynamic was hard to ignore.

By 1936, they were household and box office names. At this time, they made two films together, “Follow the Fleet” and “Swing Time,” which made $2.7 and $2.6 million, respectively.

They reunited for their only color film in 1949.

Ginger’s career declined in the 1950s due to a move away from classic films. She returned to Broadway. Fred remained in the industry and embraced television.
