If you truly want to escape the city, but also want to avoid tourist destinations, you should consider adding McCloud, California to your staycation bucket list.
Established in the late 1800s as a lumber mill town, McCloud has a past rich with history and plenty of charm for a getaway.
While there's so much to do in the area surrounded by nature, what really stands out to me as the center of my dream McCloud getaway is the McCloud Hotel. This hotel reminds me of the famous Stanley Hotel in Colorado, but cozier and sans tourists. Get cozy with local brews and craft cocktails at Axe & Rose, and a special dinner from Sage Restaurant.
McCloud is also in close proximity to Mt. Shasta and everything the area has to offer.
McCloud is about 3 1/2 to 4 hours north of Sacramento. Read more about its history here.
