It's kind of cute isn't it? Until it starts chasing you through the forest with laser guns attached to it.
The Honolulu Police Department spent $150,045 in federal funds from the federal CARES act to purchase the Boston Dynamics robot dog named Spot.
Spot can walk on all sorts of terrain, open doors, dance, record videos, and most likely kill humans (that last one I can't confirm, but I've seen Black Mirror).
The CARES act original purpose was to help combat COVID-19. Honolulu PD bought Spot to help take temperatures at their tent city for the homeless.
So the big question is... they bought a thermometer that costs over $100,000???
“It sounds absolutely ridiculous, I could think of a lot of better things to do with that money. It seems like people are taking temperatures everywhere and they don't need robots to do it,” Katrina Langford, a mother of two from Haleiwa said.
You can purchase your very own spot for the low low price of $74,500, but with some add ons (like a thermometer?) it'll cost upwards of $150,000.
Honolulu PD refused to talk to the media about the purchase, but released a email statement.
“Spot will help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 through touchless field screening and interaction with homeless individuals in self-quarantine,” the email said.
