Firefighters in Oklahoma were called to an apartment building on Wednesday night after a bolt of lightning struck the building, traveled through the air vents, and shattered the toilet, News Nation reports.

No one was injured due to the lightning strike, but the toilet was “severely damaged,” according to Fire Chief Dewayne Hurt.

A toilet exploding due to a lightning strike is a rare occurrence. One of the last recorded instances of something like this happening was in 2019 in Florida. Lightning struck a Florida couple’s septic tank, ignited the gasses within, and caused all of their toilets to explode.

Officials believe the lightning stuck the apartment building’s roof, and then the charge went through the metal exhaust vent and into the water in the toilet. Once the charge was in the bowl, it most likely caused the entire toilet to explode.

Be careful out there.
