Having your license plate stolen off your car is not what we would consider an ideal trip to Funky Town.
But the Fort Worth Police department has issued a warning that the new year has brough an increase in license plate thefts across the city.
The department says license plates can be stolen in a matter of seconds. Fort Worth resident Jimmy Cook told NBC DFW his license plate was stolen after returning home from work.
“I was in my house and about 30 minutes later, my license plates were gone,” he said.
Officer Daniel Segura encourages drivers to make plate checks part of their daily routine.
If you notice one, or both, of your license plates missing, the Fort Worth PD recommends taking the following actions:
-File a police report and request a copy, in case of legal or identity theft issues.
-Contact your county motor vehicle section to apply for a replacement license plate. Here’s the Tarrant County link.
-Check for unauthorized charges on your Toll Tag account.
-Inform your auto insurer and ask if you need to file a claim or take other action.
-Monitor your financial accounts and personal information because stolen license plates may be used in fraudulent activities.
