Before Wal Mart and Target ruled our streets, most families would go their grocery shopping at Piggly Wiggly.
Founded in Memphis in 1916, Piggly Wiggly opened its first spot in Texas in 1918, at 1612 Commerce St. in downtown Dallas, and is often credited with “the creation of the modern self-service supermarket. Though you can still see the name sprawled on some buildings across DFW, none are operational.
Not right now, anyway.
Apparently, Piggly Wiggly is preparing for a comeback of sorts in North Texas!
There are currently stores operating in Paris and Athens, and franchise owner Fernando Soto says sales are up “30% to 35%,” following the conversion of Save A Lot stores to Piggly Wigglys in the spring of 2022.
According to the Dallas Morning News, Soto will be opening a Piggy Wiggly in Sherman in January, and believes there’s market for more locations across DFW.
Piggly Wiggly is owned by C&S Wholesale Grocers, who is in agreement to purchase 26 grocery stores in Texas from Kroger, which also owns Albertsons. Preliminary plans would see the conversion of some of those stores, which include Kroger, Albertsons, Tom Thumb, and Market Street into Piggly Wigglys.
Currently, there are about 500 Piggy Wiggly stores, mostly franchise and licensed locations, operating in 18 states.
