For years, high school football games in Texas can be streamed, but a new amendment passed by the University Interscholastic League (UIL) has opened the possibilities of games to air as part of regular, TV broadcasts.

According to Chron, both schools participating in the game must agree to the broadcast, and the ruling would take effect on August 1, 2027.

Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) Executive Director Joe Martin says the ban was lifted in order “to keep up with exposure for schools and teams amid ongoing competition for eyeballs from college football.”

He said, “Our coaches believe that we need to promote Texas high school football as many places as we possibly can, whether it's on linear TV or it's live streaming. To be able to protect Friday night lights and continue to promote the great things that we have in this state with Texas high school football.”

Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath would need to sign off on the amendment to make it official, but if he does schools would not be required to air their games on television, but it would “create a pathway for a broadcaster to televise their games.”
