There is encouraging data coming out of Bay Area hospitals.
State figures show that the number of COVID-19 patients in the region’s intensive care units has fallen sharply.
At its peak on April 7, the Bay Area saw 212 patients in ICUs with the coronavirus. Now, that number has fallen to 149 - a nearly 30% drop.
State data also shows the number of Bay Area cases overall has dropped by 22% since the beginning of April.
"We at Good (Samaritan Hospital) have seen patient loads decrease week after week," Good Samaritan Hospital Spokesperson Sarah Sherwood told KCBS Radio recently. "It is a good sign. We’re cautiously optimistic the number of cases in the ICU and in the hospital have decreased week after week."
Public health officials credit the progress to shelter-in-place orders.
But, it is not all good news in California.
The overall number of cases in the state continues to grow and is now up nearly 29% since the beginning of April.
