A 27-year-old Marin County man is among the Americans currently in Wuhan, China, where a deadly coronavirus continues to spread rapidly.

Doug Perez teaches English in Wuhan, but with schools and other buildings closed, Perez remains in a state of uncertainty, according to his father who told KCBS Radio about his experience at the center of the health emergency.

“He’s confined. He pretty much stays most of the day in the apartment,” Douglas Perez, Sr. said. He and his wife Christine communicate with their son daily. “He goes out occasionally to walk the dog, but he doesn’t venture out too much.”

Perez Sr., of Greenbrae, said his son goes out to the supermarket for food when needed, and of course wears a mask while doing so.

"It's pretty desolate," Perez Sr said, adding that he and his wife are "concerned" about his safety.

The coronavirus has so far killed more than 200 people in China, and has prompted the World Health Organization to call for a global health emergency declaration. The State Department said that Americans should not travel to China while the disease is spreading rapidly.
