Teachers are getting an education in online education. The San Mateo County Office of Education has partnered with the San Mateo County Community College District to offer summer sessions on distance learning.

It was a quick pivot when schools were shut down due to the coronavirus according to Executive Director for Curriculum and Instruction with the San Mateo County Office of Education Karen Gnusti.

“We went from one full model of education to a completely different model of education in a very short amount of time,” said Gnusti, “and many teachers had no training in that.” 450 K-12 teachers in 23 districts are currently taking part in training sessions. Areas of focus will be individual assessment, keeping students engaged, communicating effectively, and grading following a credit/no credit semester.

“And the grading is a big part of secondary education and will be really critical and essential as we go back to an A through F model.” said Gnusti.

This time of learning will continue as part of professional development

“Teaching online is not something that you learn overnight.” she said.

All districts are also preparing for the possibility at any time that learning could return to online.
