Governor Newsom dropped a bombshell Tuesday, one that sent shockwaves through parents and teachers throughout California. Newsom announced that the next academic year could start early to help the state rebound from the coronavirus pandemic.

With so much of life on hold because of the coronavirus, and kids learning via ZOOM or not at all, few expected this announced from Governor Newsom at his daily briefing.

“We recognize there’s been a learning loss because of this disruption, we’re concerned about that learning loss even into the summer,” said Newsom, “we are considering the possibility of an even earlier school year into the fall, as early as late-July or early-August.”

— Office of the Governor of California (@CAgovernor) April 27, 2020 The Governor said the next school year could start sooner than usual to try to close the learning gap created by the premature end of this academic year. There would be staggered shifts, socially distant classrooms, and a combination of in person and distance learning. Kids might return to the same teachers they had this year to help ease the transition.

Governor Newsom said his decision and more information will come sometime in the next few weeks. He also outlined a plan to move to stage two of reopening, with some retail and manufacturing facilities allowed to resume operations over the next few weeks. But reopening movie theaters, hair salons, concerts, and sporting events - that’s still months down the line.

“We’re still by no stretch of the imagination out of the woods yet, it’s just stable.” said Newsom.
