Staff and students at Cal State East Bay are urging school administrators to hold off on reopening campus due to ongoing COVID-19 health concerns.

Nick Wirz represents the California State University Employees Union.

"Many of our members are over 65 or have underlying health conditions," Wirz said. "It’s unnecessary. For four months, we’ve been working from home. We’ve been doing the work. We’re here to serve the students."

Staff has allegedly been told to clean their own workspaces, but complaints are starting to pile up because of that.

"Cleaning is something that (the school wants) us to do," CSU Employees Union representative Diego Compos added. "A lot of the solvents that are used cause reactions."

They’re also worried about an active COVID-19 drive-thru testing site that remains on campus.

A Cal State East Bay spokesperson responded to KCBS Radio’s request for comment, saying they've developed a plan to minimize exposure to COVID-19 by implementing physical distancing and cleaning protocols, as well as reduce the number of people who are allowed on campus at a time.

Many schools in California have already announced they are utilizing virtual learning to start the year, including several high schools in the Bay Area, Stanford and UC Berkeley.
