Students have created a memorial with balloons and candles at a high school in Antioch where a classmaste was fatally shot Friday night.

The 16-year-old boy who died was shot three times during a fight in Deer Valley's parking lot. The school's basketball team had played crosstown rival Antioch High School.

"Our hearts and sympathies are with the families during this time of unimaginable pain," said Antioch Unified School District officials as they announced his death Sunday.

"We, along with the rest of AUSD, denounce this senseless violence and call on the community to come together to address such vicious brutality," said the statement. "Our children must be taught that solving disagreements with violence is not the answer and that there are other ways to resolve our differences that do not result in the unjust and unnecessary killing of our youth.

The district statement described the basketball game as "a peaceful athletic event."

Grief counselors were on hand at Deer Valley High School as classes resumed Monday.

Police have not made any arrests or revealed information about a possible suspect.
