Amid calls for racial justice throughout the nation, one of history's most well-known and revered environmentalists is now facing scrutiny himself.
While the 128-year-old group does not have any physical statues or monuments to Muir, Brune said his team is "advancing a conversation" internally about ways they relate and honor Muir’s legacy appropriately.
"John Muir is a cultural figure in this country and we wanted to start by painting a broader picture of the impact he had," Brune explained.
Brune also said the Sierra Club is evaluating staffing to better diversify by including more Black and Indigenous peoples, and is hoping to shift $5 million over the next year to those efforts.
