For the first time in over 100 years, the Alameda County Fair was canceled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, but there’s good news to come out of it.
The Fair is usually the culmination of a season of kids getting up before dawn, feeding and watering their animals, cleaning their pens and giving them exercise. Now, hundreds of 4H kids who were raising animals for auction are still going to be able to strut their stuff in an online auction going live Friday.
"A lot of the kids, even though there’s going to be no fair and there’s going to be no live judging per se, the animals were still groomed and they look great," Cooper told KCBS Radio. "The kids really, despite everything, did a great job."
Because it’s online, they might end with a wider reach and more bidders - and you can even go in "halfsies."
"There’s also a really easy auction to be able to split a pig. One person, let’s say if you and I wanted to purchase a pig together, I would go on and bid for it…and we would (each) be able to pay for half of the animal."
About 250 pigs, goats, lambs and cows are all up for bid.
