A racial slur against African Americans was found at an elementary school in east San Jose and education officials have reported it as a hate crime.
The epithet written on a poster at the Robert Sanders Elementary School was the third instance in the past year that racist vandalism has been found in the Mt. Plesant Elementary School District.
"Do we see a pattern developing? I don't know," said Superintendent Mariann Engle. "Diversity is our strength. That's what we're trying to concentrate on."
In response to the incidents, the district has decided to completely change the curriculum. Teachers have been undergoing diversity training.
Like the first two incidents, school officials have reported this as a hate crime to police in San Jose.
