SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS Radio) -- A horrific collision left four people dead on US Highway 101 in San Francisco early Thursday morning. Authorities said it was caused by a woman driving the wrong way on the freeway.

The 12:30 AM incident involved a Volkswagen Cabrio being driven southbound in the northbound lanes of Highway 101.   Near the Paul Avenue exit, the Volkswagen slammed into a Ford Escape taxi.

The cab carried a male driver as well as a male and a female passenger.

Twisted wreckage covered several lanes of the freeway. Northbound lanes of Highway 101 were closed at the scene for several hours. The San Francisco Coroner's office removed the bodies at around 6 AM, but lane closures remained in effect into the morning commute, leading to traffic delays.
