With less than three weeks to the conclusion of the census count in the state, reports show only about two-thirds of Californians have checked in.
The numbers in the Bay Area are a lot better, however.
In Contra Costa and Santa Clara Counties, the response rate is at 76%, so far. Alameda has seen a 74% response rate, and San Mateo is reporting a rate of 77%.
San Francisco has seen a surprisingly low rate at 65%, with a variety of districts and neighborhoods reporting a lack of responses, including Marina and Bayview-Hunters Point, said Ditas Katague, Director of California Complete Count.
Katague told KCBS Radio there are 2,000 census tracts statewide with low response rates.
“Either they are, you know, multi-units, right, which makes it harder for an enumerator to try to get in,” she said. “Perhaps they’re in, sort of, behind locked security doors or gates or they’re crowded households.”
The count is currently set to finish at the end of the month, although a judge ordered the U.S. Census Bureau to temporarily stop winding down its operations Saturday.
