Helping The Homeless, One Extra Sandwich At A Time

There's an informal trend of people leaving free food for the needy in public spaces in San Francisco.

(KCBS Radio) - Sharing is caring - and in San Francisco, people are catching on.

You see it more and more — a fresh salad, a newly made sandwich, or a hot cup of coffee sitting on top of a trash-can or fire hydrant, just waiting for someone who's hungry to come along, pick it up and enjoy.

The trend is spreading, according to Jamie McDonald of the Giving Tuesday charity.

"If you think about a lot of younger people, who don't necessarily feel that they've got lots of money to give to a non-profit, but to be able to buy someone coffee or a sandwich — that's what we love," she said. "We all have something to give, whether it's our time, our talent, our encouragement, and we see those acts of kindness all over the world, and it's truly inspiring."

Want to take part? Next time you're picking up lunch, add a little something to your order, then leave it where a homeless person can easily find it. It feels good.
