Retailers Expect Highest-Spending Back To School Season, Even As Coronavirus Pandemic Persists

It's just about that time of year for back-to-school shopping, though you’d think the coronavirus pandemic would slow that down.

You'd be wrong.

Retail fortune tellers are actually foreseeing more spending than usual.

"Total spending for K-12 and college is expected to surpass the $100 billion mark this year," said Katherine Cullen, Senior Director of Industry and Consumer Insights at the National Retail Federation.

That would be the most ever.

She told KCBS Radio that instead of shopping for the coolest sneakers and latest fashion trends, parents are looking for ways to improve the home learning environment.

That means high-ticket items.

"We're seeing consumers say they’re going to purchase more electronics, of course, bigger items like a laptop or a desktop computer," Cullen said.
