Elected officials rolled up their sleeves and spent time at Samaritan House on Pacific Boulevard in San Mateo, a charity leading the fight against poverty on the Peninsula and in the South Bay.

The charity provides food to the needy and is distributing food to an increasing number of people as it continues its mission during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Congresswoman Jackie Speier — along with fellow elected officials Kevin Mullen, Jerry Hill, Mark Berman, Scott Weiner and Phil Ting — packed bags and boxes with food, and loaded them into trunks of cars.

Speier told KCBS Radio that she encouraged her colleagues to help because the Samaritan House is in great need of volunteers.

“There are just lines of cars,” Speier told KCBS Radio. “They are dealing with 250 cars a day.”

As demand increases, we are beyond thankful for the ways our volunteers have stepped in to help us bridge this gap of need. One grocery bag at a time, thank you @RepSpeier, Senator Jerry Hill, Senator Scott Weiner, CA Assemblymember Kevin Mullin, and CA Assemblymember Marc Berman https://t.co/SwScA8yUVV

Volunteers are needed to help organize and hand out food, especially on Monday mornings. Shifts are about three hours long and masks are being provided.

The charity is also in need of donations — like pre-packaged products — if those wanting to be involved are unable to volunteer.

As unemployment rises across the nation, statistics about savings have become apparent.

“Most people have only 400 dollars for emergencies,” Speier said. “And you can run through that very quickly, as we’ve seen, so it’s time to help out.”
