It’s pedestrians and cyclists only along sections of sections of roadways in San Francisco’s Golden Gate and McLaren parks. The city closed them to vehicle traffic indefinitely to allow people to have a place to exercise and stay safe. A three mile long stretch of John F Kennedy Drive, which sits at the heart of Golden Gate Park, has been transformed into a pedestrian and cyclist boulevard.

The closure to motorists runs from Kezar Drive to Transverse Drive, where people can take in the views of the Conservatory of Flowers and other iconic sights. Officials said closing the roadway is really important, especially because the city’s shelter in place order has been extended through the end of May.

“This shelter order is hard for people, and people need to connect with nature,” said Director of the SF Recreation and Parks Department Phil Ginsburg, “it strengthens our immune systems, it’s calming, and hopefully this provides a safe space for people to do that.”

In McLaren Park, the city’s third largest, John Shelley Drive will remain closed indefinitely as well.
