San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott says his officers are issuing citations to people violating the shelter in place order, but he says that for the most part people are following them.
“To date we have two citations of two individuals and there have been twenty six total warnings or admonishments” said Scott, “twenty two of those were with persons who were not found to be social distancing, and four were with non-essential businesses.”
Chief Scott says that the San Francisco Police Department has stepped up patrols. The neighborhoods giving the department the most trouble have been the Mission and the Tenderloin. Homelessness has been one of the major contributing factors to issues in that area as some residents simply have no place to go.
“We’ve seen some burglaries and vandalism of businesses,” said Scott, “our officers are out and will be paying close attention to business that have closed and make sure that we can do what we can to not allow that to be a trend that our business owners have to deal with.”
Scott also warned of new scam, one that appeared online around the Bay Area, where individuals come to residents’ door posing as government officials with free masks. Scott says that no one should answer the door to these individuals and that they should be reported to the authorities.
“Those are not city works, those are not CDC workers, nor are those public health workers,” said Scott, ”if someone knocks at your door in a residential area please don’t open it, don’t let them in, do not accept a mask, call 911.”
