San Leandro’s shoreline near Hayward is more marsh than beach these days, leading officials to consider restoring the area to its former state.
However, decades ago, a sandy waterfront stretched at least 23 miles along this portion of the Bay Area’s coastline — unlike the five-to-six miles that exist now.
Ecologists say natural erosion from the San Francisco Bay's tides and development over the years have been big contributors to the area’s shrinking coastline.
The news has urged some to call for the expensive restoration of the beach area.
San Leandro officials say they are on the hunt for a consultant to assess the beach and the marshlands in order to figure out what the next steps are for the future of this stretch of land.
