The San Francisco 49ers may no longer have the right to be in charge of the team's home games at Levi’s Stadium, after Santa Clara city council members voted to revoke the stadium-operating contract.

The city said it recently received information showing fraud, misappropriation of funds and willful misconduct by the Niners organization.

“It’s clear that the 49ers’ performance off the field is terrible,” said Santa Clara Mayor Lisa Gillmor. “We cannot let them continue to manage, or mismanage, our stadium.”

The move came after the city council voted last year to take legal action against the team.

A 49ers spokesperson said the council’s vote is “clearly an act of retaliation,” after the team joined with civil rights leaders to defeat Measure C, a ballot measure pushed by the city council.

The stadium management change will not go into effect immediately because the city and the team are still locked in a legal fight over non-NFL events.
