San Francisco’s homeless encampments remain a major point of concern in fighting the coronavirus pandemic. Despite some city efforts to move the homeless into hotel rooms, camps remain and social distancing and good hygiene are nearly impossible for residents.
That is why Supervisor Rafael Mandelman is proposing the Safe Sleeping Sites Resolution, which would open sanctioned camps throughout the city.
“Tent encampments are growing largely without adequate social distancing or access to hygiene and sanitation, creating a public health hazard for encampment occupants and neighbors,” says Mandelman.
The sites would provide food, water, restrooms, janitorial services and 24/7 staffing and tents would be kept at least six feet apart - an effort that so far is not working in sidewalk camps.
Proposed sites include Everett Middle School, some city-owned properties and perhaps even Kezar Stadium, the original home of the San Francisco 49ers.
