San Francisco International Airport

An experiment to ease traffic flow at San Francisco International Airport that offered free parking for 30 minutes did not improve congestion, officials admit.

The hope was that drivers who were picking up or dropping off travelers would pull into a short-term parking lot for up to a half hour rather than circle around the terminals and create crowding at the curbs.

But the enticement didn't attract many drivers, SFO spokesman Doug Yakel said.

"This program did not really make that much of a difference," said Yakel.

So, beginning October 1, drivers will again have just 10 minutes to burn inside a lot before they get charged for parking.

That 10-minute cutoff is designed to spare drivers who mistakenly entered a garage and intend to leave immediately.
