A vigil was held on the steps of San Francisco’s Federal Courthouse building to honor 17 inmates and ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) detainees who died of coronavirus while incarcerated.

The protesters who held the vigil stood in a semicircle 6-feet apart and read aloud the names of those who they say died in state and federal prisons and ice detention facilities.

“We’re here standing in front of the federal courts today because judges in this pandemic are now the arbiters of life and death,” Cho said.

Across the state, many prisons and jails have provided early release of inmates to protect against the spread of the virus.

KCBS Radio reached out to ICE for a comment but have not yet received a response.
