WALNUT CREEK — Declaring June “Pride Month” in Walnut Creek is a move many supporters say was a long time coming. But Mayor Pro Tem Loella Haskew has some reservations about raising the rainbow flag here at City Hall.

"There is a longstanding council position that we will not opine on sexual preference, racial, religion," said Haskew.

She’s concerned the Pride flag will symbolize the community “picking a team" and that the American flag already sends a clear message.

"We have a flag already up there that represents fairness to all and acceptance to all," she said.

Haskew actually voted for the resolution saying she’s accepting of all LGBTQ people.

Councilman Kevin Wilk says in a time of hate and discrimination, it’s important for Walnut Creek to join other Bay Area cities in standing up for equality.

"Love for all, hate for none, we're in the most welcoming and accepting regions of the entire country," Wilk said. "I'm glad to see Walnut Creek be part of this acceptance of cities that are raising the flag as well."

Walnut Creek officials will finalize their decision on May 21.
