SAN FRANCISCON (KCBS Radio) -- One of two companies authorized to operate app-enabled electric scooters in San Francisco has pulled its fleet off the streets.

The move by Skip Scooters in its hometown comes after one of the company's scooters caught fire last week in Washington, D.C.

Skip announced it decided out of  what officials called "an abundance of caution" to pull the scooters from service while they investigate what happened and why.

Skip operates as many as 625 scooters in San Francisco with other operations in D.C. and Atlanta.

In the Washington incident, a scooter parked outsidev a coffee shop caught fire. Initial reports from firefighters indicated the fire started near the scooter's battery compartment, but no official cause for the fire has been released.
